Noel's Christmas present: Boys team up with Chris De Burgh for tribute to tragic mum

Two teenage boys who raised more than £80,000 in memory of their late mother have touched hearts again – by recording one of her favourite songs with Chris De Burgh. Ben and Jamie Hazelby and dad Paul were surprised by Noel Edmonds for a TV show – then whisked to London to record with the singer.

The family, from Cheadle Hulme, Stockport, were picked out by producers of Noel’s Christmas Presents who were moved by their story. The boys were devastated when their mum Gill died from ovarian cancer, aged just 41. But Paul, 44, Ben, 17, and Jamie, 14, were so overwhelmed by the care she received in her last hours at St Ann’s Hospice they set up an appeal in her memory. They raised £50,000 in just eight months and went above their £75,000 target to pay for the refurbishment of the day care unit at the hospice’s Heald Green site at a fundraising ball in November.

As a thank you for their hard work, Noel and his team decided to give the family a treat.

He surprised them in front of an audience of 1,000 while they were collecting for the hospice at the Arndale Centre. They were taken to the famous RAK Studios in London, which has previously hosted the likes of Robbie Williams, The Who and Oasis. They met Elton John’s producer, Stuart Epps, and were told they would be recording a version of Chris De Burgh’s Lonely Sky – a song which they had performed at their mum’s funeral. But the surprise wasn’t over – seconds later, De Burgh walked in – and started singing with them.

Now, the song will be released as a single, with all profits going to St Ann’s Hospice.Paul said: “Lonely Sky is such an important song in our lives.

“When Gill and I got married it was on the only album that we both had. “It was just one of those songs that we both loved and for the boys to record it with Chris De Burgh is a dream come true.“It was the most incredible and magical experience of our lives. “Gill died less than two years ago and we have been through so much since then. There’s no normal way to respond but we like to think we have responded in a positive way by doing what we can to help St Ann’s in her memory.” Gill, an NHS nurse, was first diagnosed with cancer in May 2007. She bravely battled her illness but died in January last year.

As an extra treat for Ben and Jamie, they were given the chance to meet one of their favourite bands, McFly, backstage at the M.E.N. Arena.

Paul added: “We’ve had a tough time but are looking forward to Christmas and seeing what 2011 holds.“We are going to continue to support the hospice and take every day as it comes.”

The single, Lonely Sky, by Ben and Jamie Hazelby, featuring Chris De Burgh, is available to download on iTunes for 79p.
